Trezor.io/Start | Starting® Up® Your® Device®
Welcome to the official quick start for your Trezor hardware wallet. This guide takes you through the essential steps — unboxing, initial setup, configuration, and security best practices — so you can manage your crypto with confidence. The instructions below are intentionally straightforward and practical, written for people new to hardware wallets as well as experienced users who want a clear reference.
What you’ll need
Before you begin, make sure you have three simple things ready: your Trezor device, a computer or smartphone with a modern browser, and a secure, private place to write down your recovery seed. Do not share your seed with anyone — Trezor never asks for it. If you have any other hardware (USB-C adapter, OTG cable for Android) prepare them now.
Unbox and inspect
When you open the box, check that the device is sealed and the tamper-evident elements are intact. Familiarize yourself with the buttons and screen. Trezor devices are intentionally minimalistic: a small display and a pair of buttons (or touch controls on newer models). Physical buttons reduce attack surface compared to software-only solutions.
Connect and choose setup method
Connect the Trezor to your computer or phone using the included cable. Then open trezor.io/start in a supported browser. The website will detect your device and offer two primary paths: create a new wallet or recover from an existing seed. Choose Create a new wallet if this device is brand new to you.
Create device PIN
During setup you’ll be prompted to create a PIN. Pick a PIN you can remember but that others would not guess. The PIN is stored only on the device and is required for every connection. If you forget your PIN you must recover the wallet using the recovery seed — that’s another reason to keep the seed safe.
Write down your recovery seed
The device will generate a recovery seed — typically 12, 18, or 24 words depending on model and preferences. Write the words down in order on the included card or a dedicated seed-storage solution. Do not photograph or store the seed on any connected device or cloud service. Consider using a fireproof/waterproof storage method if you want long-term durability.
Verify and confirm
Once the seed is recorded, the device may ask you to confirm several words from the list to verify you have written them correctly. Only after correct confirmation will the device complete initialization. This verification step prevents mistakes during recording.
Install and use Trezor Suite (optional)
Trezor Suite is the official desktop app that complements the device. It offers a friendly interface for managing coins, viewing transaction history, and connecting to third-party services. You can use the web-based flow if you prefer — both are secure when you confirm transaction details on the device screen itself.
Receiving and sending crypto
To receive crypto, generate a receive address inside Trezor Suite or the web interface and verify the address on your device screen before sharing. For sending, always confirm every transaction detail (amount and recipient address) on the Trezor display. Approving transactions only on the device prevents remote host compromise from stealing funds.
Advanced: passphrase and hidden wallets
If you require additional protection, enable a passphrase on top of your seed. A passphrase creates a hidden wallet that is inaccessible without the extra word or phrase. Be careful: if you forget the passphrase, you will permanently lose access to the hidden wallet. Consider whether the trade-off fits your threat model.
Backups and recovery
Keep at least one secure copy of your seed in a separate location. In case of device loss, damage, or theft, you can recover funds to a new Trezor or another compatible wallet. Test recovery with testnet or small amounts if you want to practice the flow before performing a full recovery.
Keeping your device secure
Always download firmware and apps from official sources. Trezor firmware updates improve security and add features — install them when prompted, and confirm firmware fingerprints on the device. Never share your seed with anyone, and be mindful of phishing sites. The device’s screen and buttons are the ultimate authority; only approve actions you recognize.
Troubleshooting & support
If you encounter problems — device not recognized, initialization issues, or firmware update errors — visit trezor.io/support for official troubleshooting steps. The support pages contain step-by-step guidance, FAQs, and safety checks to confirm your device is genuine. If you suspect compromise, move funds to a new seed immediately.
